What Does it Mean to be Happy?
Several months ago, I heard another speaker deliver an interesting presentation. He referred to recent research into well-being and stress prevention. The key feature of this study was "What it is that makes a person happy? " The findings concluded that happiness equates to the following five factors:
- Having enough money,
- Achieving worthwhile goals,
- Spending time with people you like,
- Staying in the present,
- Having a limited number of choices.
These findings are not surprising and they make it clear what you need to focus on. The challenge is how to cover off all five points most of the time. Check out How to Triumph in Adversity.

In the northern hemisphere, on today January 16th it is "Blue Monday. " It's officially the most depressing day of the year. How do the experts validate this statement? According to the pundits and the expert who coined the phrase; it is due to:
- the gloomy, unpredictable cold weather,
- our debts being at their highest,
- our low motivation level due to the previous factors,
- we lack something to look forward to (i.e. in UK there are no bank holidays in January)
- plus we have have probably abandoned our New Year's Resolutions.
In fact they are predicting that this year could be the most depressing ever because of celebrity deaths, anxiety over Brexit, and fears about a Donald Trump presidency in the US. In 2005 Dr Cliff Arnall, formerly of Cardiff University, came up with a light-hearted formula for predicting the gloomiest day of the year based on the above demotivating factors. Celebrate Your Business 365!
I ask you, who in their right mind wants to celebrate a dull depression day? Blue Monday? No thank you! So what common sense approach can you apply, when surrounded by negativity and bad news? Well you can start selling you to you. Create a 365 diary. (more in my book, Confidence the 7 Keys to Your Happiness ) In short this is a positive step to take at the end of each day. You review your day and simply write down one thing that you have done really, really well. And at the end of a year you will have 365 successes to look back on. You will have a personal pocket confidence booster. The key to your success with this is consistency.
